Mayo offers the longest coastline of any Irish county, and there are some amazing pristine, beaches to be enjoyed.  A number of Mayo beaches carry the coveted, Blue Flag recommendation for the cleanest beaches, while there are also, a good proportion of Green Coasts.  There are countless other hidden sea coves and golden crescent beaches all waiting to be explored.

Do not leave Mayo without swimming in:

  • Keem Bay - a classic horseshoe-shaped golden strand on Achill.

  • Mulranny beach - another crescent beach beside a saltwater marsh alive with curlews, oyster-catchers, terns and rare plants.

  • Ross Beach, Killala - a gorgeous sandy spit of land sticking out into the bay where the French Navy arrived in 1798 to assist the United Irishmen in their ill-fated rebellion.

  • Bertra Beach - another long, thin sword of sand sticking out into the sea, right under Croagh Patrick.

  • Clare Island, Achill Island and the Mullet Peninsula out from Belmullet all have great beaches – although the last named can be shallow.

Mayo is also home to a number of top class Leisure Centres which include Swimming pools and spa facilities. These indlude:

  • Lough Lannagh Leisure Centre in Castlebar
  • Claremorris Leisure Centre
  • Ballina Swimming Pool
  • Westport Leisure Centre
