Heritage & Conservation

National Heritage Week

We're delighted to confirm that National Heritage Week 2020 will be taking place from the 15th to 23rd August 2020.

Due to restrictions on social gatherings this year, the Heritage Council and Heritage Officers are inviting you and your community to explore a topic on the 2020 theme, which is ‘Heritage and Education’

The new approach, which is NOT about organizing events, is designed to promote the sharing of experience and knowledge.  You can research an aspect of heritage on your doorstep, share or re-learn a heritage skill, or explore an aspect of Ireland’s educational heritage and then SHARE this on the heritage week website as a project

Please go to www.heritageweek.ie for more details and help on how to design your project and your participation in heritage week this August

My Mayo Competition

As we all, in these times, have been reconnecting with our local places, we want you to tell us about your favourite place or aspect of your heritage that is important to you.

Our heritage is all around us, it is part of who we are. It is our landscapes, rivers, lakes and bogs, our wildflower meadows and hedgerows, our fairy forts, holy wells and monuments, our historic towns and villages. It includes our customs, traditions, folklore, songs and games.

Choose your favourite place, feature or tradition and let us know why it is special to you. You can send in a photograph, a drawing, a story, a poem or anything that conveys what it means to you.

Prizes will be awarded in 3 categories: Junior (Under 10); Youth (10 to 18); and Adult (18 +). A selection of Entries will be chosen for inclusion in a publication entitled ‘My Mayo’.

Send your entries by email to heritage@mayococo.ie or by post to Mayo Heritage Office, Aras an Chontae, Castlebar, Co. Mayo by Friday 25th September 2020
