Project Description

The N59 Rossow Bends scheme, between Newport and Westport, is 1.8km in length and continues from the N59 Kilbride Scheme (completed 2012). The section is part of the overall N59 Westport to Mulranny Road Improvement Scheme.

The existing road and junctions were extremely deficient in cross section, alignment and visibility. The Great Western Greenway, a 42km off-road walking and cycling trail, runs close to and parallel to the N59 in this area and crossed the N59 at-grade at this location.

The project comprised of the following improvements: -

1.8km of Type 3 Single Carriageway road

1.2km of 2.5m wide cycleway, Incorporation of the Great Western Greenway into the carriageway cross section and some offline re-alignment of the greenway itself

Removal of an at grade junction and replacement with an underpass.

Re-alignment of 6 side road junctions
